Brad Schreiber, author of "Music Is Power: Popular Songs, Social Justice, and the Will to Change" returns to talk about his favorite albums, music books and music documentaries!

In the first part of our chat with S. E. Feinberg about his book “Southern Man: Music and Mayhem in the American South,” which he co-authored with Alan Walden, we focused on the legendary work Walden did with R&B artists such as Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, and Percy Sledge.. It wasn’t always peaches and cream: the music business is tough. But after following his passion for R&B and building the careers of many of the legends in the genre, Alan Walden needed a break. 

In Act Two, author S.E. Feinberg tells us how Alan was renewed by the music of The Allman Brothers Band. Listening to hundreds of bands, he discovered Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Outlaws, amongst others and helped define the sound of what would become known as “Southern Rock.”

Director Danny Garcia joins us from the NYC premiere of his film to talk Max's, CBGBs, New York City in the swinging ’60s and filthy ’70s, the birth of punk rock and making a movie during Covid times. U2 planted the seeds for "The Joshua Tree" during an existential journey through America. As Irishmen in the 1970s, the band grew up with the belief that America was a place of freedom and prosperity, a symbol of hope and a refuge for all people. However, global politics of the 1980s undermined that impression. 

Bradley Morgan joins us to explore the political, social, and cultural themes rooted in "The Joshua Tree" when it was originally released in 1987 and how those themes resonated as a response to the election of Donald Trump when U2 toured for the album's 30th anniversary. He juxtaposes the band's  journey through America with his own journey by becoming an Irish citizen in the age of Trump and places the album's relevance in context with the current political climate.

Marc Wasserman is the author of Ska Boom: An American Ska and Reggae Oral History. He’s also played bass in a number of Ska bands, and backed some of the genres legends in the historic1998 Skavoovee tour.

Marc joins us with stories, anecdotes, history, gossip, and, most importantly, the feeling of what it was like to be there as groups of young, ska-crazed acolytes spread their passion and ignited a fiercely loyal dedication to a burgeoning culture. Before John Lennon retreated peacefully into private life in 1975,he fought a major legal battle that went under the public radar. Just as his "Rock and Roll" oldies record hit the market, Morris Levy the mob-connected owner of Roulette Records, released "Roots," an unauthorized version of the same record. Levy had used rough mixes of John’s unfinished rock and roll recordings and claimed the former Beatle had verbally agreed to the arrangement. The clash led to a lawsuit and countersuit between Levy and Lennon.

Attorney Jay Bergen, a partner in a prestigious New York City law firm, represented John in this epic battle to his own recordings. Millions of dollars were at stake. Jay joins us to tell how he worked closely with John to rebut Levy’s outrageous claims. He also recounts how John explained his recording process in poetic exacting terms to a judge., who know little about The Beatles, and John’s solo career. It also paints a detailed personal picture of John and his world in 1975 and ’76, when he was to have a new son and go into happy seclusion to be a husband and father.

Stevie Van Zandt is a true renaissance man. Most, of course, know him as Miami Steve Van Zandt, the guitarist in The E Street band, backing Bruce Springsteen and conquering the music world. In the early '80s, Van Zandt stepped away from E Street to embark on his own odyssey and refashioned himself as Little Steven, a political songwriter and performer who would mastermind the recording of the anti-apartheid anthem “Sun City” Van Zandt would also put out several records with the Disciples of Soul, and produce a myriad of great artists and albums. 

So what to do next? How about starting Little Steven's Underground Garage, a weekly syndicated radio show? Or taking a role in the soon-to-be-legendary TV show, “The Sopranos?” Van Zandt introduced himself to a whole new audience as Silvio Dante, the the unconditionally loyal consiglieri to Tony Soprano. We talk to Stevie about his new memoir Unrequited Infatuations about all of the above and more. He’s led an incredible life.

Other Music — located in Manhattan's East Village — was more than just a store that sold CDs, records, tapes and magazines. And it was THE place where a generation of New Yorkers at the dawn of the Internet age went to discover groundbreaking music by artists who would go on to become household names and underground icons. However, in the changing face of the music industry, the legendary store closed its doors in 2016.
Directors Puloma Basu and Rob Hatch-Miller, an ex-employee of Other Music confess “they both learned a lot about music, were introduced to New York City culture, and gained a second family in a daunting new city." They say they are honored to be able to tell the story of a place that was so special to us and to our life in New York City, as it was to so many other people around the world.

STEVE KEENE: “A Few More Minutes” with Robert Schneider

In the ’90s you could not avoid Steve Keene paintings. Everyone seemed to have a Keene. In New York, they decorated tiny apartment walls, clubs, record stores and dive bars including Brownies, CBGB’s Gallery, the Knitting Factory, Kim’s Underground, and Other Music, The New York music scene of the 1990s embraced the do-it-yourself aesthetic and Keene was the unofficial king of that. His democratic approach to making and selling artwork allowed young people to buy original artwork for the first time.

Photographer Daniel Efram has put together the definitive book on Keene and his work, and talks to us about Keene’s paintings of famous covers, and covers of albums he likes, as well as covers that have no particular meaning to him other than being an artistic challenge. “I’m making kind of a history of albums,” Keene says. “They’re monuments to something that doesn’t exist anymore.” Tune in.

COVER SONGS: “A Few More Minutes”  with Ray Padgett

Leonard Cohen's “Hallelujah” has been covered by more than 300 other artists in virtually every genre, including Willie Nelson, k.d. lang, Justin Timberlake, Bono, Brandi Carlile, and Bon Jovi, to name a few. Hell...the song was even in “Shrek”! But the song was originally stuck on side two of 1984’s Various Positions, an album that Cohen’s record label deemed unfit for release. In fact, Walter Yetnikoff, the head honcho at CBS Records told Cohen “Leonard, we know you’re great but we don’t know if you’re any good.” 

“Hallelujah” is arguably Cohen’s biggest and most beloved song, as well as one of the most covered songs in history.

We were asked to contribute a holiday song suggestion for the Songfacts podcast for their annual Holiday Special. We knew there's be lots of suggestions, so we had to dig deep, and when “the other Steve” suggested the super rare “Sexy Christmas Baby Mine” by low-rock legends Morphine.

The perfectly titled “Sexy Christmas Baby Mine” was originally the B-side for the 7-inch release of “Cure For Pain,” and recently included on the anthology “At Your Service.” It is everything you’d expect from the band; it is different, it is classic and it is undeniably Morphine. Additionally, we were able to speak with drummer Billy Conway about the song and his memories and recollections of “Sexy Christmas Baby Mine.” Happy Holidays!

Control for Janet was never simply just about her desire for economic and creative control but rather an existential question about the desire to control and be in control over her bodily integrity as a Black woman.Ayanna Dozier talks about Janet's quest for control as heard in her sixth album, The Velvet Rope, an emancipatory act of self-creation that allows her to reconcile with and, potentially, heal from trauma, pain, and feelings of alienation. Dozier tells us how this album stands out as a revelatory expression of emotional vulnerability by the singer, one that many other artists have followed in the 20-plus years since its release.
